Prayer: A Holy Occupation
Published in Hardcover by Discovery House Pub (January, 1993)
Author: Oswald Chambers
Average review score:

Wow
This book has been a great blessing to me.

A great complilation from a great writer
This book is composed of gems on the topic of prayer from Chambers' various books --- regrouped for concentrated study of various "requirements" of prayer: Obedience, Simplicity, Communion, etc. All the excerpts are conveniently indexed back to the original source. Questions are interspersed throughout the text to provoke deeper consideration of each subject. Every turn of the page brings another profound insight, and it's a book that can be referred to again and again.

Chambers really knows how to get to the heart of the concept of prayer as a relationship --- one that changes us, not through answers to prayer, but simply through the act of prayer as communion with God. He challenges us to take charge of our prayer life as "our only business." He reminds readers that prayer isn't about getting what we want from God, it's about God drawing us to Him through our obedience.

Chambers writes, "Prayer is the outcome of our apprehension of the [true] nature of God, the means whereby we assimilate more and more of His mind, and the means whereby He unveils His purposes to us." In this process our priorities are properly aligned with His, we can more accurately intercede in prayer for others, and we see answers to prayers we might otherwise perceive as unanswered.

Anyone who has read or considered reading "The Prayer of Jabez" especially needs to get this book for the balance it brings to the topic.

Three Great Orchestral Works in Full Score

Dissapointing printing
The music is of course fantastic, but I was dissapointed by the quality of the printing in this volume. Sometimes note stems are virtually nonexistent, and the very small verbal instructions are almost impossible to read. The reason for this is not Dover's fault; it's because this book was printed directly from ancient master plates of the original French editions. In fact, all of Dover's "reproductions of old French editions" series seem to share the same problems. Yet none of Dover's German editions has the problem. Oh well, I guess all I can say is: Let the Buyer Beware.

The Unplayable Lie: The Untold Story of Women and Discrimination in American Golf
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (June, 1996)
Authors: Marcia Chambers and Amy Alcott
Average review score:

The average golfer will be unsympathetic to this "injustice"
This book will have very limited appeal. Taken at face value, the author's condescending ar guments are valid. But the average golfer has very little sympathy for upper crust women who want to have the same unfettered right to dis criminate against the rest of us that their male counterparts have enjoyed with impunity for years. They are outraged that private country clubs view them with the same disdain that they have for public course patrons. The utter ab surdity of their position is shown in the quote that introduces the text. A divorcee who was banished from her country club dares to proclaim that "Rosa Parks was told to go to the back of the bus. I was thrown off the bus." Yeah, right!

An Excellent Book Which Exposes The Hypocracy Of Golf
This non-fiction book is extremely well reseached and written. The discrimination against women that it recounts is appalling, and sadly common place. This is an ideal starting place for anyone who wants to impliment change at his or her club. The book also deatails that manner in which the PGA Tour, the PGA of America, and the USGA foster continued discrimination against women by holding tournaments at clubs which discriminate. This is also a morality tale which shows just how far women have to go in American in the late 20th century to overcome sex discrimination. The men at these private clubs who are discriminating againt women are the same men who are at the economic top of our country. They are more than willing to do in private what they know is both leaglly and morally wrong to do in their business relations. But for Title VII and the state laws against discrimination, women would be far behind where they are today. An excellent book which should be read by anybody who loves the game of golf or who is concerned with social justice.

Ancient Structures: Remarkable Pyramids, Forts, Towers, Stone Chambers, Cities, Complexes (Catalog of Archeological Anomalies)
Published in Hardcover by Sourcebook Project (May, 2001)
Author: William R. Corliss
Average review score:

This is a great book on a fascinating subject
This book is the nineteenth in the Catalogue of Anomalies, and has a companion entitled, Ancient Infrastructure. This book is divided into eight chapters: ancient astronomical observatories; miscellaneous ancient structures; forts; ancient furnaces, smelters, hearths; pyramids, especially the great pyramid; cities and complexes; ancient towers; and anomalous stone chambers and passage graves. Each entry has a clearly delineated description, data evaluation, anomaly evaluation, possible explanation, list of similar and related phenomena, and then an in-depth examination of the structure.

This is quite a fascinating book! Unlike some books on similar subjects, this book treats its subjects in a no-nonsense, scientific manner, providing a real understanding of the structures. My one complaint against this book is that it reads like a textbook, being too often dry, making it rather heavy for the light reader. That said, though, this is a great book on a fascinating subject. If you are interested in anomalous structures, then I cannot recommend this book too much!

The Art of Orchestration : Principles of Tone Color in Modern Scoring
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press Reprint (January, 1970)
Author: Bernard Rogers
Average review score:

timbre colors and hues
I had the good fortune to study both composition and orchestration with Bernard Rogers at the Eastman School. His approach to orchestration skillfully wedded both the creativity of ideas and timbre to an exrtraordinary degree. While, as he explained to his students, he never intended the little book as a textbook, composers who carefully read every page and study every example of the scores excerpts included in this unique book will benefit from his unique way of thinking about texture and timbre. Orchestration students of the composer will remember well his references to passages such as the opening of La Boheme or passages from Borodin that he treated as small gems of the orchestrators treasury. If you can find this book, you will be well rewarded if you are a serious student of the orchestra and composition.

The Art of Quartet Playing: The Guarneri Quartet
Published in Paperback by Cornell Univ Pr (June, 1987)
Authors: David Blum and Guarneri Quartet
Average review score:

An amazing quartet with lots to say!
My first encounter with the Guarneri String Quartet was in reading Arnold Steinhardt's book, *Indivisible by Four*. There, I gained an understanding and fascination for the relationships within the quartet and the overall amazing professional and musical workings of a well-established chamber group. This fascination led my to seek out *The Art of Quartet Playing*. In this book, David Blum and the Guarneri quartet explore various technical aspects of quartet playing and string playing in general. Many of the ideas for rehearsal and performance techniques presented by the quartet (on topics including the decisions as to which players should give cues and when) provide useful advice for quartets of all levels. While mere descriptions of quartet techniques could tend to get old fast, the quartet members' witty and satirical comments, often coming out of nowhere, keep the reading entertaining as well as informative. This book ends with a journey through the score of Beethoven's Opus 131 quartet, guided by the explanations of the people who know it best, the musicians who play it. I recommend this book to anyone who loves string quartets, playing them or listening to them. While it may not take hold of the imagination as fully as *Indivisible by Four*, there is much to be learned and enjoyed in these conversations between David Blum and the Guarneri String Quartet.

Attic Nights of Aulus Gellius/an Intermediate Latin
This is an excellent workbook to assist the Intermediate Latin student. It continues to instruct on the elements of grammer and vocabulary while introducing you to translating excerpts of speeches from one of the greatest writers of the Roman Empire. It simple to understand, yet fully capable and complete enough to assist the self-taught student. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to learn the mother of all languages - Latin.

A touching, heartwarming romance
THE BRIDE QUILT is a delightful book that chronicles the growth of Madeline Preston, a 19-year old spinster who flees an arranged marriage to be a frontiersman's mail order bride. Unfortunately, Maddie is plagued by bad decisions (both her own and the guide leading her party out west), and finds herself stranded in the Rocky Mountain wilderness in the middle of winter with a snowstorm on the way. She stumbles across an isolated cabin occupied by a huge bear of a mountain man and his five newly orphaned nieces and nephews.

Maggie knows nothing about being a pioneer woman, but she's willing to learn, and learn she does. Along the way she falls in love with the children and their uncle, who lost his wife and unborn child nine years previously and now shys away from permanent relationships. Their romance provides a touching and heartwarming story.
